Central Saint Martins graduate Shaun Samson has picked up the tenth ITS#Fashion (International Talent Support) award for Collection of the Year.
The prize was judged by a panel including the likes of Viktor & Rolf, Antonio Berardi, Hilary Alexander and Mandi Lennard. It has bagged Samson €15,000 towards his next collection, rumoured to be womenswear.
The winning collection, pictured above, was in Samson’s words about “the distinction of urban tribes – how each Scottish class has a distinct and unique tartan,” explained the designer. “I kept the silhouette simple so that there was an ultimate focus on the fabric and the combinations of different materials.”
Samson will be showing at London Fashion Week under the acclaimed Fashion East banner.
Viking Wong’s Busy First Year
We’ve had our eye on Viking Wong for what feels like ages – but since the LCF graduate only kicked off the label in early 2010 it’s actually been just over one, action-packed year.
In that time, the label has exhibited at the V&A, shown at London and Paris fashion weeks, featured in Vogue’s Top 12 designers to watch and placed 2nd in the prestigious EVOQUE Fashion Awards in Stuttgart.
We love the ‘early-90s business woman’ vibe from these Autumn/Winter 2011-12 pieces and can’t wait to see what S/S12 has in store.
See VikingWong.com for more.
Prettier than the average bear
I do love a good bear. So how exciting is this?
Simeon Farrar’s gorgeous bear-print scarves are now stocked in Liberty.
The brand is giving one away free to the person who guesses the number of bears on the 3 metre-long chiffon scarf (or counts them – pop into Liberty if you’re in town with a spare hour or three). Click on the image to enlarge.
Tweet your guess to @simeonfarrar. Looks like all the low-hundred guesses to date have been too low – so aim high and good luck!
Sue Rock Originals awarded honours from New York Senator
We were delighted to learn of one of our favourite labels receiving much-deserved honours recently.
Sue Rock of Sue Rock Originals was awarded the ‘Excellence in Service’ award in the New York ‘Women of Valor’ awards.
Pictured above receiving the award from New York Senator John L Sampson, Rock received the prize in recognition of her support for domestic violence survivors in the area.
The label is an eco-fashion brand of women’s separates, using reclaimed fabrics to create the flattering basics line. Sales fund a non-profit where volunteers create new clothing for women living in temporary accommodation after having left a violent domestic situation.
Amazing work from Sue; you have our unqualified admiration!
Fun to rival Angry Birds: Spot the NEWGEN Difference
The BFC are notoriously cautious when it comes to naming their choices for the future of Britain’s fashion industry.
I’ve noticed that the last few seasons’ of NEWGEN sponsorship announcements are so consistent that they now provide a whole new form of entertainment: spot the seasonal difference!
You’ll recognise the catwalk winners for A/W12 (pictured above) from their NEWGEN shows at S/S12. That is:
Changed we managed to spot include the promotion of Dominic Jones from exhibition spot to Presentation and the addition of SISTER by Sibling. Mary Katrantzou is a new omission, presumably after scaling the heights of the Swiss Textile Award.
Of course brands need a few consecutive seasons of support to gain a decent chance of success, but you can’t help but miss the excitement of a bit more change (check out the giddy switch-up between A/W01 to S/S02! Heady days).
Play the comparison game yourself at the BFC’s current and previous winners‘ pages.
Fashion East Spring/Summer 2012 line-up
Lulu Kennedy has chosen her latest favourites:
Marquez Almeida (pictured above) and Maarten van der Horst have landed the gold-dust S/S12 Fashion East spots for the first time, while James Long gets another season in the limelight since debuting his womenswear line last season.
These are the names to keep an eye on; previous Fashion Easters include Richard Nicoll and Meadham Kirchhoff.
Fashion Fringe’s Final Favourite Three
The Fashion Fringe panel have narrowed down their long-list to the final three:
Congratulations, chaps! Click their names above or head to the official Fashion Fringe site to see the design sketches that secured the finalist place for all three.
Kelly Love’s Rennaisance approach to A/W11
Not content with designing exquisite womenswear, Kelly Love took her talents a step further for Autumn/Winter 2011-12.
The designer wrote a song that formed the basis of her ‘Song of the Rainbird’ collection. London-based band Nova’s Basement then filled in the musical gaps, recorded and produced the song for your aural pleasure.
You can listen and buy the track on iTunes for a bargain 79p.
The lookbook shoot is pretty delightful, too:
Fashion Fringe 2011 Finalists Announced
This year’s Fashion Fringe finalists have been plucked out by the likes of Roland Mouret, Claudia Schiffer, Donatella and.. *cough* John Galliano.
I wonder whether and how JG’s changing fortunes will affect the award. It previously went to the now-stellar Erdem, so I’m sure the lucky 11 will still be happy to take the winner’s mantle.
The finalists in full:
- Aidan Drago
- Bethan Juliff
- Danielle Jade Windsor
- Fyodor Golan
- Heidi Leung (graduate collection pictured above)
- Jiyun Lapthorne (beware: auto-playing vidio)
- Kimberley Giacomelli
- Liz Black
- Nabil El-Nayal (more auto-played video)
- Nika Urbas
- Sam Parsons
Good luck to ‘em all.
